Freedom of expression and opening of sailing art

Dialogue at ONS+ in Stavanger – Freedom of expression in focus

On August 26, 2024, ONS+ in Stavanger brought together stakeholders from different sectors to discuss socially relevant topics, including freedom of expression – a fundamental right in any democracy. The story of the Restoration and the Norwegian emigration in 1825 formed the backdrop for a deeper reflection on freedom of choice and the role of exchange in society. This journey marked the start of a new future for many, and the importance of freedom of expression is still as relevant in today’s society, where openness and diversity of debate are central.

Pre-opening of the exhibition sailing to New York in 2025

Tora Aasland, chair of the National Committee Crossings200, opened the exhibition marking the 200th anniversary of Restauration’s journey. The exhibition, which will sail to New York in 2025, is an important part of the anniversary celebrations. Artist Ingvar Moi was present with his impressive ship paintings, painted with local tar from Tysvær and fired on Karmøy. Through his work, Moi incorporates local history and brings Restoration to life in a unique and powerful way.

The short film about life in Stavanger before the departure in 1825 was also shown, produced in collaboration with students from the University of Stavanger and pupils at Vågen upper secondary school. The film gave a vivid insight into the time before emigration. Cultural elements were provided by the male choir Chess, which created an atmospheric setting for the event.

Hosts and participants

Ann Irene Sem-Henriksen chaired the event, with regular guests such as Tora Aasland and Hard Olav Bastiansen from Stavanger Municipality. The event linked the past to the present, with important discussions about freedom and cultural heritage.

Restauration Venneforening and Crossings200

Restauration Venneforening is a driving force behind the preservation of the ship’s history, and their work strengthens the ties between Norway and the USA through culture and history. The association organizes important events such as this one during ONS+, where the story of Restauration is kept alive through dialogue and art. The Crossings200 project is central to celebrating the 200th anniversary of the first Norwegian emigration, working with national and local stakeholders to promote awareness of this important part of Norwegian history.

ONS+ – Platform for societal dialog

ONS+ is an extension of the well-known ONS conference, with a special focus on socially relevant topics such as freedom of expression, innovation and sustainability. Through partnerships with organizations like Restauration, ONS+ invites attendees to explore historical and cultural perspectives and promotes dialogue on how these values continue to shape our world today.
